Activewear needs different fabrics, machines and skills from casual wear: four-way stretch knits, flatlock and coverstitch, bonding, laser cutting and compression fits. Ask what share of the factory’s output is activewear and which categories it makes most. A factory that mainly sews T-shirts and hoodies will find leggings and sports bras harder to get right.
Most of China’s activewear is made in Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang. Zhejiang sits close to large knit fabric and dyeing clusters, which helps with fabric development and colour matching. Wherever you source, ask where your order will be sewn and whether you can visit or audit that site.
Ask for certificate numbers and check them: amfori BSCI and WRAP for social compliance, the Textile Exchange database for GRS recycled claims, and the OEKO-TEX label check for Standard 100. A certificate you cannot verify is not worth much.
Ask for swatches with composition, weight in gsm and test results for pilling, colourfastness and shrinkage. Ask how the factory samples and how many rounds it usually takes. 3D fitting before the first physical sample saves time on both sides.
Know who your day-to-day contact is and who signs off quality. A good process has a pre-production sample, inline checks during sewing and a final inspection before packing, and welcomes third-party inspection when you want it.
